Our Story
Diversion Hub began in 2018 as a pilot program of the Arnall Family Foundation, operating out of a small space in the Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office. At the time, the Department of Justice was investigating conditions in the Oklahoma County jail, including the high jail death rate. Vera Institute of Justice published a report with recommendations to improve the justice system, galvanizing gatherings of local leaders, funders, system stakeholders, and community members to design an innovative approach: a comprehensive voluntary service model implemented by a new nonprofit organization that would reduce jail overcrowding while filling gaps in the social service continuum for individuals and families cycling through the system.
As we began our work, our pilot team learned from clients struggling to meet court requirements that returns to jail largely stem from life barriers like lack of transportation, employment, housing, and childcare. With the resources to address these issues of access and stability, our clients had greater success navigating and exiting the system.
In June 2020, we opened our Midtown Oklahoma City location. Within weeks, our team served hundreds of clients, demonstrating that voluntary services are effective and vital. The largest driver of cyclical incarceration, leading to jail overcrowding and worsening poverty, is unmet needs. By reducing recidivism, we are increasing public safety.
Since then, Diversion Hub has grown to serve thousands of clients annually at three locations in central Oklahoma. In 2024, almost 6,000 individuals and families participated in our 11 programs and initiatives. We continue to fill gaps with intentionality, grounding our work in evidence-based solutions and a commitment to innovation.
